Our story

How we got here

2020

Luke started this business in Melbourne in 2020 after seeing what smart home installers were charging. The good systems were wired, complex and priced for the top end. Worse, once they were in, the homeowner couldn’t change a thing without calling the installer back.

Then

We took a different road. Modern wireless gear, open standards and a hub that sits quietly in the background doing the clever bit. You get a home that works together, that you can add to over time, and that you actually own.

2026

In 2026 we became CleverMate. It says what we’ve always tried to be: cleverer than the competition, and a mate who looks after you once the job’s done.

Founder and Director

Luke Coulter

Luke has spent his career across smart home, telecommunications and eHealth, and started CleverMate because good automation shouldn’t be reserved for big-budget builds. He still runs most first consultations himself.

Smart Home Engineer

Xan

Xan is a mechatronics and electronics engineer with a strong background in continuous improvement, quality assurance and project management, and a real passion for smart home automation and energy management.

Smart Home Lead

Mark

Nearly a decade working with smart technology, from the early days to where it can genuinely change how a house runs. Mark is the one who finds the clever solution when a job gets tricky.

Assistive Technology Lead

Tess

Tess got into smart tech designing a setup for her brother, who lives with cerebral palsy. She went on to a Masters in IT and AI, and now leads our NDIS and assistive technology work.

We don’t do it alone. Every install is backed by licensed electricians and handymen we’ve worked with for years, so whether you’re in Brunswick, Brighton or Barwon Heads, the same crew standards apply.

Come and see it working

Reading about a smart home is one thing. Standing in one is another. Our Brunswick showroom is set up like a real house, so you can ask the lights to do something, see the cameras on a screen, and hear the audio move from room to room. Appointments only, so we can give you our full attention.
